THE CULTURAL DIASPORA
A LECTURE BY JULIA PORTELA
Director of the Department of Theoretical Studies of Art
UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS OF CUBA
INSTITUTO SUPERIOR DE ARTE (ISA) HAVANA

MONDAY OCTOBER 25th 2010 6PM
This lecture is free and open to the public
Join us at DISJECTA for Julia's lecture and slide show about Cuban Contemporary Art in the Cultural Diaspora, a discussion of the ways in which Cuban cultural identity and migration influence and are evidenced in the art works and practices of Cuban artists both living in and outside of Cuba. Cuba has a long and rich visual art practice tradition. Contemporary Cuban artists work in a wide range of mediums and although they have limited exposure in the US (due to the embargo in effect since 1962), the Cuban contemporary art scene is internationally recognized for its intellectual depth and mastery of craft.
