DISJECTA PRESENTS:
Score.
A new installation by Avantika Bawa

April 2 - 30, 2011
Opening Reception: April 2, 2011 from 6-10pm
Gallery Hours: Fri-Sun 12-5pm

Disjecta Interdisciplinary Art Center is pleased to present Score. a new installation by Portland-based artist Avantika Bawa. Score. explores the making, breaking and rearranging of rules, strategies, structures and histories. Examining the past use of Disjecta's building, Bawa amplifies the working mechanism and occasional failures of systems through the creation of an abstract and altered Bowling Alley. The alley serves as a setting in which the past is made present, architectural nuances of the space are highlighted and our current economic state is painfully glorified. For Score. Bawa creates a perfect yet playful distortion through an engagement with the architecture and location of the space. This approach is heightened through the use of colors and materials that complement the geographic landscape while retaining a loud silence.

Score. will be on exhibit from April 2-30 at Disjecta Interdisciplinary Art Center, 8371 N. Interstate Ave. Portland, Oregon. An opening reception with the artist will be held Saturday April 2, from 6-10p. Regular gallery hours are Friday-Sunday 12-5p and by appointment. Disjecta will also host a happy hour and artist talk on Friday April 22 from 6-9 pm featuring a lecture by Bawa and the "Bawa Special", a signature cocktail designed specifically for the artist.

Curator-in-Residence:
Jenene Nagy, Portland-based curator and visual artist, has been appointed Disjecta’s first Curator-in-Residence. Throughout the 2011-2012 exhibition season, Nagy will present a series of solo shows featuring installation, site-specific and project-based works including many artists who have not had major exhibitions in Portland previously. Nagy is currently co-curator, with Josh Smith, of TILT Export:, an independent arts initiative that works in partnership with a variety of venues to produce exhibitions.

The Curator-in-Residence program is the first of its kind in the region and allows for significant engagement with a broad range of artists. Rotated on an annual cycle, the program provides an opportunity for emerging local and national curatorial talent to develop and expand the scope of their practice through a series of exhibitions in Disjecta’s dynamic 3,500 square foot space.
